Production RAG Is a Pipeline, Not a Vector Search
Production RAG is not a vector search call.
It is a pipeline.
A lot of RAG systems fail not because the model is weak, but because the pipeline around the model is weak.
If the data is stale, duplicated, badly chunked, poorly filtered, or incorrectly ranked, the answer will still look confident.
But it will not be reliable.
A production RAG pipeline needs clear stages:
- Ingestion pipeline: Documents enter safely.
- Document registry: Lifecycle is tracked.
- Parsing: Structure is preserved.
- Chunking: Knowledge becomes searchable.
- Embedding: Meaning becomes vectors.
- Indexing: Chunks become retrievable.
- Metadata enrichment: Context becomes filterable.
- Authorization filtering: Access is enforced (tenants or users).
- Query understanding: Questions becomes structure.
- Retrieval plan validation: Filters are verified.
- Hybrid retrieval: Meaning meets exactness.
- Deduplication: Duplicates are removed.
- Reranking: Candidates are prioritized.
- Context Construction: Retrieval becomes context.
- Answer Generation: Context becomes response.
- Evaluation: Quality is measured.
RAG is not only about retrieving relevant chunks.
It is about controlling the full lifecycle of knowledge before the model writes an answer.
Production RAG is not retrieve-then-generate.
It is ingest, parse, chunk, embed, index, understand, retrieve, clean, rank, construct, and then generate.
The LLM does not answer from your database.
It answers from the context your pipeline builds.
A weak RAG system just retrieves text.
A production RAG system manages knowledge.
That is the difference.
