Production AI Agents Need Routing Layers, Not a Single Router

AI agent does not become production-ready when it understands intent.
It becomes production-ready when it knows how to route intent within context.
The biggest routing mistake in AI agents is assuming intent classification is enough.
User Message > Intent Classifier > Router > Nodes
But as the agent becomes more complex, the router starts receiving more responsibility:
- understanding user intent
- tracking active workflows
- deciding whether to continue or interrupt a process
Eventually, the router becomes the place where all business logic lives.
A production agent needs routing layers, not a single decision point.
A common pattern is Hierarchical routing pattern.
As agent systems grow, the biggest challenge is not intelligence, it is coordination.
The architecture must prevent a single component from becoming responsible for every decision in the system.
The quality of an agent depends on how clearly responsibilities are distributed across its layers.
